PILOT PROJECTS

TURKEY

Green Ideas has agreements with two municipalities in the Asia part of Turkey, Cekmekøy and Çayırova which together cover about 110,000 households.

These pilots will start during 2017

The main motivation for this pilot projects is the control over the waste values and creation of an Ecosystem where waste is been recycled thus giving it a new value (transformation to soil and/or biogas plus energy through pyrolysis technology) and creating revenues.

Why Turkey?

According to the Turkish Statistical Institution data from 2014, the amount of solid waste collected by municipalities receiving waste collection services is around 28 millions of tones by year.

No streamlined logistics of sorted waste from end-to-end

No real end-processing incentive but energy processing/incineration/pyrolysis; organic to biogas or rich soil.

The recent Turkish Waste Reception Centre Regulation required that the municipalities plan and implement a system that will enable waste sorting at its source (in households) and commence with pilot- projects in order for households to start sorting waste.

According to the previous arguments, Turkey represents a large market with many opportunities.

The company and its partners aspire to encourage source separation of solid waste among the population in close cooperation with the authorities

Fundamentals

  • The Sortér™ bin system and bags will be delivered to the households in the pilot areas.
  • Top-bottom strategy: firstly the distribution of the bin-system will permit the measurements regarding organic wastes (to be transformed to soil/ or biogas) and the rest the for incineration or to be processed by pyrolysis technology (energy) for further rollouts.
  • Double collection system: domestic solid waste collected in the yellow coloured bag and the recoverable waste in the blue coloured bag.
  • Specific days of waste collection will be assigned for specific areas.
  • The collected wastes need to be weighed regularly every day during the pilot period. On the other hand, waste will be analysed once each month during (material group characterisation) during the pilot study by the sub-contractor firms of the municipality.
  • Streets collectors (scavengers) are an important factor in waste management of Turkey, and the waste from selected households/neighbourhoods need to be collected prior to the intrusion of street collectors.
